Health

Doctors used to be paid with pigs. Whether a local GP (General Practitioner) or specialist, in the old days, doctors took whatever payment their clients could afford. Now, though, the healthcare system is impersonal to the point that if you do not have the correct amount of payment or insurance coverage, then you may die.

The regulations surrounding doctor’s care, nursing, or hospitals has created a monopoly deciding whether people live or die based on your proof of insurance before they will lift a finger to help. The powers in control of mass physical and mental care are not interested in the end well-being of patients. Rather, they are only concerned with the business and profits they can make providing services. Many times, people either cannot afford procedures or care and do not seek help, or those in need are billed to such an extent that they lose everything they own. Then, many times, they simply die anyway.

This is what is wrong with healthcare of every kind. The machines and buildings required helping people live are similar to those agriculture must purchase to produce society with food. The farm owner or doctor has no choice but to go into debt buying these machines simply to stay competitive or in practice. This is inhumane and the very opposite of what the Hippocratic Oath declares. Do no harm.

What should happen is for doctors and professionals in the industry stand up and declare their services free or exchange payment. This means that if a patient wants to pay the doctor or clinic with a pig, then the doctor accepting this form of payment can sell or exchange the pig for something else or money. Also, laws should be made that unless proven medical malpractice occurs, patients cannot sue the physician or medical professional who offers this alternate care service. If medical doctors are unwilling to work for hospitals or clinics or any business unless they can serve the public accepting pay in any form in any amount in any length of time, then the establishments and even colleges will be unable to profit. It is a kind of walk-out refusal to work for money alone. The patient will be able to pay what they can afford and the doctor will finally be allowed to care about patients again.

Doctors used to be paid with pigs. If you are a true physician, you are not in the business of healthcare to make money. Your number one concern is to make the body well no matter if the body can afford your services. If you feel as if you need that Mercedes more than your patient needs your professional knowledge, then you are in the wrong business. I am not saying that the doctor does not need to be paid. What I am saying is that doctors understand that you live until you die. They, more than most everyone else, know that as a human being you leave behind your efforts.

Being allowed to accept gratitude in any form from patients may be more profitable to the healthcare professionals than mere money. They form remembrance within their communities and families they serve. My family still remembers their family doctor or that outstanding caring surgeon who made miracles happen on a daily basis. This is love never-ending. Those who serve others with compassion, knowledge, and understanding deserve a greater status. It is a shame and disgrace that hospital and corporate owners, and other people have forgotten that they eventually become patients, too.

My question is, do you really want an unsympathetic ladder-climbing or exhausted physician working on your unconscious body after an accident? Or would you prefer to be able to pay your doctor with pigs? Because the way healthcare professionals are pushed to perform for profits has them asking themselves the age-old question known by most CEO’s. “Is it worth it to save your life? It depends.”
